New Year’s Resolutions

About 45% of Americans make one or more New Year’s resolution every year, but let’s be real -who actually follows through?

Are these resolutions becoming a way of simply expressing one’s thoughts on the past year rather than setting a serious goal? New Year’s resolutions have become the thing that the 90s babies now promise themselves they will do for a year, but usually quit after the first two weeks. The New Year’s “ resolutionaries” are those people you see suddenly in the gym, going every day for a 4 week period following January 1st. They tend to be overweight and are hogging all of the machines. They slowly stop going to the gym, but a small percentage of them will show up one week before spring break just to do some curls and crunches.

What these people really need is a resolution for their New Year’s resolution. It’s typically any New Year’s resolution maker’s backup plan that guarantees success. The New Year’s resolution’s resolution is what happens when you find out that you won’t be able to stop using Facebook or lose 50 pounds by Feburuary, so you quickly change the resolution to avoid disappointment or self loathing.

Studies show that of these resolution makers, 75% make it through just the first week, while 46% of Americans make it through only half the year. Among the top New Year’s resolutions are resolutions about weight loss, exercise, quitting smoking, and dealing with better money management and debt reduction. What is the common goal with these resolutions? This year, it’s a mix between swag and wanting to “get the $$ up,” among other classless goals.

Females like to be more emotional with their goals and seem to take the New Year’s resolutions more seriously while the men have taken an alternative route to their resolutions. These days the New Year’s resolutions aren’t like they used to be. Let’s take a look from some twitter messages going down on the TL:

Men’s Classiest Top Resolutions:

“Leave more toilet seats up.”

“Stop watching Jersey Shore.”

“Grind harder in all aspects of life.”

“Make love to a big girl, 250 plus.”

“More tattoos”

“No tickets or suspended licenses.”

Women’s Classiest Top Resolutions:

“Stop eating fast food.”

“I always start to write tweets and then don’t post them because they’re just really mean.. I have anger problems –new year’s resolution= be nicer”

“More polished, less college…sweatpants are comfy but not so classy.”

So when did 90s babies get so emotional and egotistic? For some of us out there, it looks like we may want to look into a New Year’s resolution’s resolution.
